Generating the Certificate Signing Request (CSR)

A certificate signing request (also CSR or certification request) is a message sent from an applicant to a certificate authority in order to apply for a digital identity certificate. See more explanation please go to wiki.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certificate_signing_request

To generate a pair of private key and public Certificate Signing Request (CSR), use openssl command:

openssl req -new -nodes -keyout yourdomain.key -out yourdomain.csr -newkey rsa:2048

After you run this line command, you will get two files. They are yourdomain.key and yourdomain.csr. In the process of generating this two files, you will be asked the following information. The most important item is Common Name which must match your domain.

Country Name (2 letter code) [US]: US
State or Province Name (full name) []: Your State Name
Locality Name (eg, city) []: City Name
Organization Name (eg, company) []: Your Company Name
Organizational Unit Name (eg, section) []: Your Department
Common Name (eg, YOUR name) []: yourdomain.com
Email Address []: info@example.com

The following two attributes can be left blank.

A challenge password []:
An optional company name []:

You will need to copy and paste your CSR when submitting your certificate request to your CA.

3. Copy the entire content from your CSR file(yourdomain.csr) use vim to edit.  Click ‘Create Certificate’, and GoDaddy will begin verifying the domain and generating the certificate.

4.Then GoDaddy starts to verify your domain. Once validation is complete, you will receive an email from GoDaddy Secure Certificate Services. The email shows your SSL Certificate has been issued.

SSL KEY

5. Download Certificate files. Download the zip file which contain 2 files: 43e234eme43f5.crt (random name)and gd_bundle_g1_w1.crt. Then we need to rename these two files.  Rename the 43e234eme43f5.crt as yourdomain.com.crt, and rename gd_bundle_g1_g2.crt as intermediate.crt.

The file gd_bundle_g1_g2.crt is certificate documentation. That means GoDaddy Certificate Bundles – G2 With Cross to G1, includes Root.

43e234eme43f5.crt is your SSL certificate file.

Well, everything is ready, Let’s install the certificate on the server.

Installing the Certificate in Your Server

Recalling the first and second steps, there are three files, yourdomain.key yourdomain.com.crt, and intermediate.crt.

We now configure SSL certificate on Apache server. First create a new directory on the server, such as /home/cert/ . We will copy the three files to this directory above. We need to edit /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-default.conf to update the configuration. Prior to this, back up this file.

sudo cp /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-default.conf /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-default.ssl.conf

Then edit this file using vim:

sudo vim 000-default.conf

Now we need to declare a new virtual host using the <VirtualHost> directive. Change <VirtualHost *:80> to<VirtualHost *:443>,  HTTPS Service will listen on port 443. Then set ServerName for your domain name.

ServerName yourdomain.com

Then enable the SSL engine on. And add the location of the certificate.

SSLEngine on
SSLCertificateFile /home/cert/yourdomain.com.crt
SSLCertificateKeyFile /home/cert/yourdomain.key

SSLCACertificateFile /home/cert/intermediate.crt

If you wish to redirect users from the non-secure site to the SSL site, you can use an ordinary Redirect directive in VirtualHost:

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName yourdomain.com
Redirect permanent / https://yourdomain.com/
</VirtualHost>

That’s it, you just need to enable the secure configuration by using the command:

sudo a2enmod ssl

Lastly restart your Apache server.

sudo service apache2 restart

OK, all the certificate installation is complete, please test your site (https://yourdomain.com and http://yourdomain.com) to ensure everything works well.

Conclusion

In this article, we discussed how to purchase it with GoDaddy SSL Certificate coupon. We explain how to install SSL via three steps on VPS.  Google launched a new ranking signal to give HTTPS sites a ranking boost to encourage webmasters to migrate their sites from HTTP to HTTPS. It is an effort to make the web as secure as possible for internet users.
